Bonnells Bay Surgery was started in April 1991 when Dr Van Rooy and Dr Peterson came to Lake Macquarie for a holiday soon after finishing General Practice Training. The area seemed pleasant, and the local chemist mentioned that there wasn’t a GP next to his Pharmacy! A respected friend encouraged them to start, and the practice was built in 8 weeks. At the start, the credit squeeze was in full tilt and finance at 19% was exceedingly hard to find. The existing doctors in the area including Southlake's Practice, and Dr John Evans, were very polite and courteous during our initial approach to them about our intentions, and we thank them for this. The practice gradually grew, and for many years we did our own after hours work day and night, with the help of Dr Merlene Spear from Cooranbong. This certainly left us with some very “colourful” memories of the area. On several occasions the practice needed to expand, and gradually the facility grew to 5 consulting rooms, 2 treatment rooms and a nursing office, along with the various administrative rooms and a tearoom. We always wanted to have a waiting room where we knew most of the people. The practice was an early adopter of computerisation of practice notes and scripts in the mid 1990s with the encouragement of Dr Evans, and in 2005 the records became fully digitised after a strong hint from a young GP registrar. We particularly want to thank the wonderfully hard working and skilled staff, doctors and nurses who have helped over the last 20 years. Current The practice usually has between 3-5 doctors working at one time, and 1-2 nurses, along with a clinical Psychologist, Podiatrist and an Audiologist. One or two of the medical positions are training positions for the Royal Australian College of General Practice (RACGP) Fellowship exams, and the registrars are very involved in their educational pursuits. The practice offers nursing home care and house calls as needed, however if you are able to get to the practice this is preferable. Our after hours is done cooperatively through GP Access at Toronto, however post surgical, very unwell or palliative patients often have an arrangement with the practice for after hours care.

    Dr Dr Angela Lewis - Bonnells Bay Surgery

    Dr Lewis graduated from the University of NSW in 2008. She has a Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP). From Newcastle originally, she has worked in Sydney, Port Macquarie, Launceston and Charlestown. She has a special interest in shared antenatal care.

    Dr Dr Birgit Tauber - Bonnells Bay Surgery

    Dr Tauber graduated from Rostock University Medical School (Germany) in 1994. She did her postgraduate training in Berlin (Germany) qualifying as a General Practitioner in 2001 in Germany. In Australia she gained experience in emergency medicine working in the Sydney Adventist Hospital Emergency Department and Hawkesbury Hospital Emergency for 8 years. She holds a Certificate for Family Planning and Sexual Health. Her interests are in emergency medicine and paediatrics.

    Graduated from Sydney University in 1984, and did her post-graduate training in Canberra. She completed her Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP). Dr Van Rooy is an examiner for the RACGP. Her interests include office gynaecology, menopause, and geriatrics.

    Graduated from Newcastle University in 1984. He has a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) and a Masters in Family Medicine from Monash University. His interests are surgery, paediatrics and emergencies. Dr Peterson is an examiner for the RACGP, and a member of the Australasian Society of Aerospace Medicine.

He has completed a Diploma in Child Health (U.Syd). Simon’s interests include paediatrics and a broad range of general practice presentations.
