Mr. Shane Blackmore is a specialist in sports injuries, as well as arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee, hip, and shoulder. His expertise covers all aspects of knee, hip, and shoulder surgery. After completing subspecialty fellowship training in London and New York, he returned to Melbourne with world-class experience in the latest arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques, including Robotic Joint Replacement.
He is among a select group of Australian-trained surgeons whose training has been accredited by both the Arthroscopic Association of North America (AANA) and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). Additionally, he is a member of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) and a fellow of both the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA).
Shane has extensive experience managing sports injuries in college and professional athletes in both London and New York. A highlight of his time in New York was serving as an assistant team physician for the New York Rangers during their Stanley Cup final appearance—their first in 20 years.
One of the first surgeons in Victoria to be trained and accredited in Robotic Joint Surgery, Shane specializes in advanced hip and knee replacement techniques, including Anterior Hip Replacement. As part of his New York fellowship, he mastered these modern techniques and now trains other surgeons who visit his theatre to observe and learn Robotic Joint Replacement.
His training included a highly competitive 12-month Orthopaedic Sports Medicine fellowship at the New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases, a world-leading institution that rarely awards ACGME-accredited fellowships to foreign-trained surgeons. Under the mentorship of renowned surgeons such as Dr. Laith Jazrawi and Dr. Thomas Youm, he performed a high volume of arthroscopic procedures, primarily on the knee, hip, and shoulder. His cases ranged from routine injuries sustained at home or work to complex sports injuries in recreational and professional athletes.
His subspecialty training focused on the latest arthroscopic techniques, including:
- Knee: ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair and transplant, cartilage restoration, and joint preservation
- Shoulder: Shoulder stabilization and rotator cuff repair
- Hip: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) treatment and labral tear repair
Before his time in New York, Shane was awarded the prestigious Calvert Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the Hospital of St. John and St. Elizabeth in London. Under the guidance of Mr. Andrew Wallace and Mr. Philip Ahrens, he trained with some of the UK’s leading sports surgeons, specializing in arthroscopic treatment of shoulder and elbow injuries. While in London, he also had the privilege of working with Mr. Andy Williams, a world-renowned expert in knee ligament surgery.
Born in Melbourne, Shane completed his medical degree at the University of Melbourne before undergoing specialist orthopaedic surgical training in Melbourne. His contributions to the field include published research articles, book chapters, and surgical technique videos on various aspects of arthroscopic surgery. He is also committed to training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons through his role as Director of Orthopaedic Training at Austin Health and his continued involvement with the University of Melbourne.
Outside of his professional life, Shane is married with a young family and continues to enjoy his childhood passions—baseball, tennis, and golf, though admittedly at a less competitive level.
