Neil studied optometry at UNSW graduating in 1975. He has since worked in general optometric practice in Adelaide, as well as becoming a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in 1994. He has extensive experience in the Neurological Rehabilitation areas for those people with visual problems following stroke or traumatic brain injury. Another special interest is Sports Optometry with Neil having worked in the Eye Units for the Games Villages Medical Centres at the 1996 Atlanta, and 2000 Sydney Olympic and Paralympics, as well as the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Neil was Director of Eye Services for the two Sydney events. Neil has worked with members of the Australian Olympic Beach Volleyball teams, the Australian Institute of Sport Cycling program, has twice travelled with the Tour de France Medical Staff and has worked with many sports professionals from competitive shooting clubs. He has significant experience in diabetes management and has written educational articles for Diabetes South Australia. Neil has also been a Credentialed Eye Examiner for the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority since 1994.
